What do you want to do?
To see the active server projects and the users who are currently working on them:
In NVivo Server Manager, click the Projects tab.
The projects stored on the NVivo Server (and registered in the NVivo Server metabase) are listed along with their file sizes and project format (9.0, 9.1 or 9.2).
Select a project from the Projects box. The users that are currently connected to the selected project are displayed in the Connected Users box.
NOTE If you cannot see a project in the list, which you expect to see (for example, a project you restored using SQL Server Management Studio), you may need to Refresh the list of projects displayed in the Server Manager.
You can display information about currently connected users including the
Account they are using to log on to the server
Client access type (named or concurrent)
Time they connected to the server
Server groups they are members of (Project Creators, Administrators or Users)
Projects they are connected to
You can also see the number of CALs that are currently being consumed by connected users.
To access this information:
In NVivo Server Manager, click the Users tab.
On the left, click the Users tab.
You can use the Windows Event Viewer to monitor the errors, warnings or information generated by NVivo Server:
In Windows Control Panel (classic view), double-click Administrative tools.
Double-click Event Viewer.
(For Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2 only) In the console tree, expand Application and Services Logs, and then expand Microsoft.
In the console tree, select NVivo Service.
You back up an NVivo Server project using SQL Server Management Studio. Refer to the MSDN article How to: Back Up a Database (SQL Server Management Studio).
Each NVivo Server project is stored as a separate database in NVivo Server's SQL database instance. This means that these project databases can be backed up and restored on the same server device or a different one.
Alternatively, a project database can also be detached and re-attached into the same machine or a different one. Refer to the following MSDN articles:
To migrate NVivo Server from one server to another:
Deactivate active licenses:
In NVivo Server Manager, click the Licensing tab.
On the left, click the Licenses tab.
Click Deactivate for each license key.
Install NVivo Server on the new server.
Activate the license key.
Assign user roles and permissions.
You can migrate server project databases to a new server using SQL Server Management Studio.
This can be useful if you are decommissioning a server or migrating your system to another server. You can refer to the following MSDN articles:
NOTE After you migrate projects from one NVivo Server to another using SQL Server Management Studio, you will need to refresh the list of projects displayed in the Server Manager.
By default, server project data and log files are stored in the directory:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.QSRNVIVO9\MSSQL\DATA\
Once the server is installed, you can use SQL Server Management Studio to modify the default file location for new projects. For more information, refer to the MSDN article File Locations for Default and Named Instances of SQL Server.
NOTE You cannot use this process to move existing projects to a different location.
You can use the Repair facility when projects become fragmented and use server space inefficiently. If you choose to 'repair with possible data loss', you should back up the project before repairing—refer to Back up a server project for more information.
NOTE
It is a good idea to warn users when you intend to repair a project as they are automatically disconnected.
The project format (9.0, 9.1 or 9.2) is not changed when you repair a project.
To repair a project:
Open the NVivo Server Manager.
Click the Projects tab.
In the Projects list, select the project you want to repair.
Click Repair.
The Projects tab of the Server Manager displays all projects that are registered in the NVivo Server metabase. If you manually restore a project using SQL Server Management Studio, the project is not automatically registered in the metabase. When you refresh the project's list, the metabase's register of projects is rebuilt.
To refresh the project list
Open the NVivo Server Manager.
Click the Projects tab.
Click Refresh.
Click OK to confirm.
NOTE When the metabase project register is rebuilt, any projects that have been manually deleted from the server using SQL Server Management Studio will be removed from the list. The projects list will show only projects currently available on the server.
Project Owners are the only users who can give other users access to a project, change project properties and perform other project management tasks. If existing Project Owners are unavailable for a particular project (for example, because people have left your organization), you may need to add another Project Owner to the project.
To add Project Owners:
Open the NVivo Server Manager.
Click the Projects tab.
In the Projects list, select the project to which you want to add Project Owners.
Click Add Owners.
In the From this location box, enter the server or domain name of the user account.
Enter the user accounts you want to add—separate multiple user account names with a semi colon.
NOTE If you add a user account that has not been added to the Users project group—it is automatically added.
Click the Check Names button to automatically verify the correct user account names.
Click OK.
NVivo Server 9 is currently only available in English.
